Once again we are back with one of the most beautiful, challenging, and "epic" rides of the year. We would like to invite you out to the Third Annual Sierra Vista Classic Bike Ride.
Sierra Vista is located approximately 75 miles south of Tucson. To get there, drive east on I-10 to the State Route 90 exit and head south for 28 miles. Turn left on Highway 90 Bypass going east. When Hwy 90 Bypass turns south, look for Charleston Road (just after the Wal-Mart on the left). Turn left and travel just under two miles (1.7 to be exact) to the Buena High School parking lot and enter on your left (N. Fighting Colt Dr). The start/finish and check-in table will be located in the parking lot. Check-in time will be at 7:00 am. You must be on the road by 8:30.
Four distance options will be available. Novice riders can do the out and back route, about 20 miles each way, toward Bisbee to the first SAG stop, where you have the option to turn around to go back to the start/finish (40-ish miles). If you're feeling froggy at this point, challenge yourself to ride the next 4 miles to the top of Mule Pass before returning to the start.
Intermediate riders will have the 71 mile loop that goes through Bisbee and past the traffic circle to Naco Highway West/Hwy 92 West, then north on Hereford Road to Sag #2 along the San Pedro River Preserve/Hereford Trailhead. After refueling, it's on to Moson Road and the finish line.
Still feelin' it? Then push on for another 18 miles by making a left after SAG #2 on Palominas Road and head south to Highway 92, making the gradual and scenic climb back toward the Huachuca Mountains. Enjoy the wonderful views of the San Pedro Valley as you ride toward Coronado National Monument. Finally, it is time to turn around and head back toward Sierra Vista. You will be taking roads that avoid any high-speed traffic.
Finally, we have the big challenge, the century. To gain the additional mileage for the full century, you will pedal up toward the Coronado National Monument, enjoying spectacular views as you ascend (yes, that means climb) about five and a half miles to the turn-around point just beyond the Visitor's Center. The scenery takes on a whole new look: oaks replacing mesquites, green replacing brown, and a possible wild turkey or deer sighting.
Detailed route maps and turn-by-turn instructions will be available on the website and at the registration table.
At the finish line, you will be greeted by cheerful volunteers; and a wonderful BBQ lunch awaits, compliments of Mike's Cowboy Barbeque.
